It is a time of opportunity for snack marketers-opportunity which is tempered only by the industry’s ability to understand and address the needs and wants of their consumers. As always, snacks play various roles in the lives of U.S. consumers. In the last several years, however, largely in response to prolonged economic instability, those roles have evolved. They continue to evolve today, as the economy slowly emerges from recession. Healthier snacks remain on a solid growth trajectory, propelled by consumers’ desire to eat better, live longer and save money on health care along the way. Snacking for satiation has escalated to a new level. From-home food rituals find consumers relying on store-bought snacks as on-the-go mini-meals and/or simple mid-day treats. As a result of these wellness and satiation trends, industry growth is strongest outside traditional “sweet and savory” segments. Still, sweet and savory provides ample opportunity for growth, ignited by at-home socialization and entertaining.
The trends shaping the industry are many and complex, but retailers and manufacturers can successfully compete in this environment if they take a proactive stance in the serving market by:
- Understanding consumer perceptions around snack roles and allowing that knowledge to influence marketing message
- Driving purchase behavior in a conservative retail marketplace
- Enhancing marketing efforts to create a bigger impact in the home
- Using strong in-store messages to reinforce the value proposition and retain shopper loyalty
