WHAT:

Difficult and uncertain financial times have forced consumers to re-evaluate long-standing shopping attitudes and behaviors and to re-define what is absolutely “essential” to them. These changing attitudes are having a marked effect on the consumer packaged goods (CPG) and healthcare industries, which experienced 2008 unit sales declines of 2.1 percent and 1.9 percent, respectively. In his keynote presentation, “Call to Action: Rethinking Shopper Behavior in the New Transformational Economy,” IRI healthcare expert Steve Johnson will take a closer look at consumers’ changing rituals and provide key strategies that retailers and manufacturers can leverage to effectively serve consumers struggling to deal with the “realities of today.”

WHY:
|
Consumers have been forced to prioritize their spending based on separating what they want, from what they really need. This year is quickly emerging as the year of “reality-ism,” where reality meets optimism. The new reality has the power to continue to drive CPG and healthcare unit sales downward, because consumers are eliminating products that don’t meet their new definition of “essential,” and they are shifting their consumption to broader product use. Even though these are trying times, Johnson believes the country’s economic challenges present new opportunities to retailers and CPG marketers that are armed with the knowledge necessary to capitalize on consumers’ healthcare shopping trips.
Johnson’s presentation will address such critical questions as:
- How did shopping behavior change in 2008?
- How can retailers’ marketing techniques drive purchases across CPG departments and categories?
- Are shoppers concerned about health and wellness in a recessionary economy?
- What behavioral changes will flourish in 2009?
- Are these changing shopping behaviors and rituals permanent?
